Next Stop: City Bus

01/12/2018 - 02/03/2018

Next Stop: City Bus celebrates 25 years since Southampton City Council commissioned poet Carol Ann Duffy and photographer Nancy Honey to make new work for a project known as CityBus.

The original Citybus project was led by the then Public Art Officer Rosy Greenless OBE (now the Executive Director of UK Craft Council). It saw photographer Nancy Honey, and current Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy; spend a period of time making work while residence on Southampton buses. The resulting work was then exhibited on board a network of buses as they travelled their usual routes across the city.

The exhibition space within K6 Gallery’s phone boxes will display the original work by Carol Ann Duffy and Nancy Honey, to be seen by the public for the first time in 25 years.

K6 Gallery has also re-commissioned the project in the present day. The new body of work has once again been exhibited on board buses; this time the focus is the number 17 Bluestar route that runs from close to K6 Gallery in the city centre to Lordshill.

Photographer Toby Glanville and poet Ella Frears were commissioned to ride the Bluestar 17 route and create a new body of work to be exhibited on board. Their photographs and poems once again give a unique social snapshot of Southampton.

Toby Glanville is an established London based photographer, more used to photographing some of the nation’s more famous residents including John Hurt, Quentin Blake, Gary Oldman, Raymond Briggs and numerous others. His work has been published by the likes of Phaidon, the Guardian, The Sunday Times, the British Council and many more besides. As a poet,

Ella Frears has had residencies at the Tate St Ives, the National Trust, and the Observatory at Buckler’s Hard, New Forest. Having been published in a number of publications she was shortlisted for this year’s Outspoken Poetry Prize.

A number of events have also been organised to run alongside the work.

Next Stop: City Bus is funded by Arts Council England.
